Sustainable Urban Life

Berg | C.F. Møller Architects is creating a new residential area in the district Valla 1 at the green area Årstafältet in Stockholm. The project is based on a vision for a sustainable urban lifestyle for modern city dwellers.

The residential quarter is part of the current master plan for Årstafältet, which focuses on transforming former green peripheral areas of the city into diverse and vibrant neighbourhoods with an environmentally sound and socially sustainable profile. The design is the result of a cooperation with the contracting firm Erik Wallin, the Stockholm City authorities and the other architects working on the Valla 1 district. The neighbourhood consists of seven individual buildings of varying character, height and facades that are centred on a courtyard. The courtyard is designed with green, south-facing terraces, and allows for urban agriculture and can be regarded as a 'pantry' with locally produced goods. Between the housing plots, a vibrant urban environment with different facilities and an attractive street life is formed. It is an important objective to create room for a social life in the neighbourhood with an active community, venues and shared functions. In the node where the local main street, 'park pier' and promenade meet, there will be a small public square with restaurants. The project's vision is a sustainable urban life, which contains various service functions and qualities for the modern city dwellers, such as favourable conditions for environmentally friendly transportation like cycling or car sharing, urban agriculture, low energy consumption and other visionary solutions. The rooftops similarly enable active roof landscapes in the form of private and shared winter gardens. The project is expected to be constructed from 2015-2017.
