On Wednesday 5 December, Aarhus City Council is expected to approve the sale of the building rights to construct approximately 38,000 square metres of floorage in the Periurban Harbour Areas to a consortium consisting of Topdanmark Ejendom and PenSam. The area, called Havneholmen, has been designed by C.F. Møller Architects and consists of approximately 400 rental units. 244 ordinary two and five-room apartments have been planned, plus 140 homes for senior citizens. The development consists of a series of tall, slender buildings with characteristic steel girders at the top, as a reference to the classic canal houses with their external hoists. In the building structure, the steel girders serve to support the balconies. Mayor: Recognition of Aarhus Mayor Jacob Bundgaard is glad that the waterfront district has once again proven an attractive area in which to invest: "The fact that two such strong investors wish to participate in building up the new harbour district helps to highlight Aarhus as a city in growth. The ambitious project is a both a major asset for the city and a fine reflection of the fact that Aarhus and the Periurban Harbour Areas are viewed by many as a great setting for the good life, in terms of both housing, work and urban living." The other consultants in the consortium are NCC Construction, NIRAS, COWI and Kromann Reumert. Construction start on the project is anticipated in 2013, with the first occupation in 2015.
