The Fuglsangsø Centre is a total of 11,273 m² and contains 90 nursing homes, 16 senior homes and 20 day homes, a special dementia care unit, and an activity centre. All in close connection with both Fuglsang Lake, and the new Holing Lake right across the road. The centre is laid out like a small town with elements such as a main street, neighbourhoods and gardens. Located along the main street are the city's four quarters, which contain the various offers - nursing centres, training facilities, workshops, activity rooms and a café. The gardens are nestled between the buildings and provide various sensory experiences, starting with vegetable gardens and chicken coops, and finishing with large sitting steps down to the lake. Above the “town” - three and four storeys up - are the dwellings as separate, more private areas, subdivided into smaller and intimate units in groups of two times eight. The homes are connected to the city via the centrally located stairs and elevators around the small square formations on the main street. With an open, transparent façade, the green surroundings are continued right into the entire ground floor’s inner urban landscape. A multitude of niches, squares and alternating tall and low spaces provide the frame for everything from the full community to one-on-one relationships or quiet solitude. The Tjørring public activity centre, with its many members, has also moved into the lakeshore nursing home, where together with the café it enlivens the ground floor - both for residents and external seniors who come to share activities and social interaction. In his opening speech, Mayor Lars Krarup pointed out: "The nursing sector - and getting older in general - has changed a great deal over the decades. But I think that the key words must still be human presence, dignity and caring. In the best possible setting. The first is the job of the staff, in close interaction with the elderly and their relatives. The second is for us as a municipality to supply. And in that, I think, in all modesty, we have succeeded here in Fuglsangsø ". The 225 million DKK low-energy construction was designed by C.F. Møller Architects after an architectural competition in 2012, and was built by the contractor JFP A/S with P+P architects as sub-consultants. The first residents moved in in August 2014 and the official opening occurred on 30 September 2014.
