New auditorium complex at Aalborg University

C.F. Møller has designed a new iconic auditorium complex, which is part of Aalborg University's Sønder Tranders Campus. The complex incorporates a spiral movement, inspired by the shape of the human ear. The building houses flexible auditoria in different sizes as well as informal meeting spaces.

By request from Aalborg University, the new building is destined to become the focus point of the campus which helps to form the university's identity. The auditoria are designed as an independent sculpture, which stands out in a flotilla of university buildings, creating a specific flow in and around the complex. Taking our cue from the word "auditorium" (Latin: to hear) and inspired by the swirling shape of the human ear, the architects have designed a rounded building which seems to soak up from several directions and has small plazas around its perimeter. The focal point of interior of the building is the principal auditorium which is encircled by a upward moving spiral of stairs and balconies, from which a multitude of activities in the complex can be perceived. One important function in this new building is provided by informal recreational areas at every level. There is ample space for spontaneous meetings in the complex. In the high foyer space, openness and transparency between the different functions creates a spatial experience which is both varied and inspiring. There is one very ingenious feature: the principal auditorium is a flexible space which can be divided into two independent auditoria, without comprising the visibility and applicability of the complete space. The building is cloaked in a graphic skin. The façades are designed as an unbroken surface, which emphasises the sculptural lines and ensures that the complex's central functions can be decoded from the outside. The graphic design was triggered by the letters AAU AUD, an abbreviation for Aalborg University Auditorium. The complex covers a gross area of 3,726 m2 . This project was developed for Aalborg University and the Danish Building & Property Agency by C.F. Møller in partnership with Moe A/S (consulting engineers) and Schønherr Landskab (landscape architects).
