The results of a parallel competition with four international architectural practices to create a new residential area overlooking Lake Gerdsken in Alingsås have now been published. Elements from all four concept proposals will be included in the residential area. While the Norwegian practice A-Lab is the overall winner, C.F. Møller Architects has been invited to continue its design of the concept for the so-called Pir-huset ("the house on the pier"). Multi-storey development with the qualities of a villa Pir-huset will be situated right beside the lake, and will be a free-standing multi-storey building with water on three sides, housing on the upper levels, and public functions at ground level. The C.F. Møller concept aims to bring the life of the city down to the water's edge and enhance the experience of the natural surroundings in the area, for example by allowing the lakeshore rushes to continue between the buildings. The building is angled so that all apartments will have views of the lake and good sunlight conditions. All of the residences are corner apartments, and the construction is on a human scale, with incisions and balconies built into the facade. In this way, the multi-storey building will achieve the architectural qualities familiar from villas. Goal: the best homes in Alingsås The clients behind the project are Claes and Ulf Melin, the owners of a large supermarket, ICA MAXI, in Alingsås. Their plans for the new neighbourhood, called Vimpeln, are ambitious: "The goal is to make use of all the good ideas, and thereby create the best homes in Alingsås," says Claes Melin.
