TOPPING OUT AT ODEON CELEBRATED IN STYLE

A symphony orchestra, fanfares, guitar solos, speeches and community singing were all part of the topping out of the splendid new Music and Theatre Building in the heart of Odense.
On Wednesday, 12 August 2015, the general public and parties involved in the Odeon Music and Theatre Building gathered in the heart of the stark concrete structure that in future will be the venue for magnificent cultural events. The project, designed by C.F. Møller, will be a cultural powerhouse with four venues, as well as the Danish National Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, under the same roof. The construction work commenced on 23 June 2014 and is the framework for much of the development that Odense will undergo in the coming years. A key step for the Odense of the future Odeon is being constructed on the site at the Odense Concert Hall, adjacent to Thomas B. Thriges Gade, that is to undergo an extensive, historic transformation in the coming years. "Odeon will be the city's major new venue," says CEO of C.F. Møller and the architect behind the project, Klaus Toustrup. "This will be a key step in the complete revamping of the entire area, with focus on Thomas B. Thriges Gade. This project depicts where Odense would like to be in the future, and Odeon is making its mark on the city, showing that things are starting to happen," he says. Major cultural significance Odeon will be one of Denmark's largest cultural venues. The largest of the four halls will have capacity for a seated audience of around 1,800 people for plays, concerts or conferences. The building complex comprises a number of urban buildings, harmoniously integrated with the neighbouring buildings. The entire complex will resemble a mini-town in the heart of the city, in which the urban buildings are connected by covered streets, squares and open plazas that merge into the surrounding quarters. Anker Boye, Mayor of Odense, finds it hard to conceal his enthusiasm. "Odeon's topping-out ceremony was a historic day for Odense, and naturally the city's residents were invited to celebrate with us. Odeon is a new venue for cultural events and not least major conferences, in the heart of the city," says Anker Boye. Focus on music The topping-out ceremony at Odeon took place at 11.30am on Wednesday, 12 August. Odense Symphony Orchestra performed in the bare concrete structure. C.F. Møller is the turnkey adviser for the project, which is led by the contractor and development company KPC. The Danish National Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, Odense Theatre, the Partnership for the transformation of Thomas B. Thriges Gade and Odense Municipality are also behind the project. COWI, Gade Mortensen Acoustics and AIX Theater Planning are sub-advisers to C.F. Møller. Everyone was welcome to attend the topping-out.
