"This building will play an important role in developing engineering studies in Denmark." This was the clear message from the Rector of the University of Southern Denmark's Faculty of Engineering, Henrik Dam, when C.F. Møller's new educational institution was inaugurated on Wednesday, 30 September. "This building will put the University of Southern Denmark right at the forefront in development terms. We've secured world-class facilities, which will ensure that research is promoted," he said. Strong collaboration One of the reasons that this faculty is such an iconic project is the collaboration between advisers, client and users. This is explained by Anna Maria Indrio, the architect responsible for the project and a former C.F. Møller partner. "There is good reason to be proud of this result. The basis for the construction project was that together we would create a building that is owned by everyone. We succeeded, even though the process has been complicated," Anna Maria Indrio explained at the inauguration. "This project was only successful because the users' opinions were heard, and since the users were a proactive element." Part of something larger The users have very clear opinions and expectations of the new faculty. "We've become part of something bigger," said Line Amtorp, Vice Chair of the Joint Council of the University of Southern Denmark's Engineering Students (Syddanske Ingeniørstuderendes Fællesråd). "The old 'Tek' was something special, but with the new building we'll hopefully also be aware of the changing seasons when we're buried in experiments," said Line Amtorp, referring to how the new building is flooded with impressive amounts of daylight, despite its high breadth and depth. "The study environment is amazing, with space for exploration, innovation and experimentation. We've always thrown ourselves into new projects, and we keep on experimenting. It's always been like this and this will continue at the 'new Tek.' The building is perfect for dialogue and dynamics." Future proofing The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark has 3,000 students and 300 employees. Even though this major project has had a large number of key persons, ranging from client to advisers and stakeholders, none of them was asked to cut the traditional ribbon to mark the building's inauguration. The engineering students' own robots handled this – headed by Care-o-Bot. According to the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Administration, Henrik Bindslev, the new building gives a lot to look forward to. "This is not just a temporary solution," he said in his speech at the inauguration. "It includes some impressive engineering work, artistic architecture and state-of-the-art facilities. This is where we can make a difference, and stay at the forefront," he said, emphasising the importance of how the faculty is now at the same level as the other large areas of the existing University of Southern Denmark. "I'm delighted that we're now moving closer to the rest of the university. Now, we'll be able to interact on a day-to-day basis with other professional areas, and engineers thrive on cooperation and sharing professional expertise and inspiration with others," Henrik Bindslev explained. With its 20.000 m², the Faculty of Engineering is one of C.F. Møller's major new flagships in the education area. With teaching facilities, laboratories, indoor climate and, not least, sustainability in a class of their own, hopes and expectations of the coming many years at Campusvej are extremely high. In the words of the students' representative: "We believe in the new 'Tek'."
