The Steno Museum

The Steno Museum, which exhibits the history of science and the history of medicine, is located in the southern part of the campus area of Aarhus University. The museum carries on the architecture of the university with its characteristic gables and the staggered building blocks held in yellow tiles.

Facing south, the museum’s three building blocks are encircled by a medical herb garden, whose round brickwork creates an informative link between the university and the city.

Facing north, the circular theme continues in the entrance area and foyer of the middle building, thus creating a connection to the round planetarium inside the building. The planetarium is located on the first floor of the building and is a custom-designed cinema with lounge chairs, a rounded horizon and valted projection screen. Throughout the construction, light colors and tiles are consistent elements; hence both in the foyer, on the terrace and in the garden.

The medical herb garden has ca. 400 medical herbs and plants in beds organized around a tight composition of square patterns. The pattern is interrupted by a diagonal artistic watercourse of blue and green ceramic tiles running through the garden, creating a lively landscape of bridges, fountains and pools.
