C.F. Møller Architects transforms Grey Industrial Harbour into Vibrant Waterfront

Respecting the city's history and preserving the harbour's buildings, C.F. Møller Architects transforms the industrial harbour at Guldborgsund in Nykøbing Falster into an attractive area with housing, an active harbour environment and green urban spaces with integrated flood protection.

The plan for the development of Guldborgsund Harbour in Nykøbing Falster covers the entire existing industrial harbour and 1.4 kilometres of wharf. In the master plan for the harbour at Guldborgsund, flood protection of the long coastline from north to south is actively used to support urban spaces and the harbour environment.

"Flood protection is integrated into the landscape solution with raised terrain plinths and plateaus with integrated parking solutions that support recreational urban spaces and an active harbour environment. As in all other coastal cities, flood protection is relevant in Nykøbing Falster because the sea water is rising. With this landscape solution, flood protection is actively used for other purposes than just flood protection, so that it is not perceived as a barrier in the surroundings, but instead is a positive contribution to housing and urban spaces", says Lasse Palm, Associate Partner and Head of Landscape & Urbanism at C.F. Møller Architects.

Unique Harbour Environment designed for Nykøbing Falster

The master plan for the harbour focuses on strengthening the town of Nykøbing Falster in general, having the town's existing strengths in mind. This includes retaining retail in the town centre and opening all streets in the town centre towards the sound, creating a link between the town and the harbour. In addition, some of the historic and characteristic buildings in the harbour area will be preserved.

The development of the harbour takes place in close cooperation between C.F. Møller Architects, and the citizens and the Municipality of Guldborgsund. Synergies between different parts of the city and existing activities are great focal points for C.F. Møller Architects:

"We have approached the project with great humility and respect for the harbour's history and the many inputs from citizens and other stakeholders and actors, combined with plenty of visits to the industrial harbour and our best experiences from similar assignments in Denmark and abroad. The harbour of Nykøbing Falster will thus be a unique place, designed for Nykøbing Falster and is not to be found anywhere else in the world", says Julian Weyer, partner and architect at C.F. Møller Architects.

About Guldborgsund Harbour

With the development of Guldborgsund harbour, Nykøbing Falster will have green urban spaces and a recreational harbour atmosphere closely linked to the town centre. Urban life opens towards the sound and the old industrial harbour is made accessible and attractive. In addition to encapsulating business and housing in the new habour area, it also consists of public functions and urban spaces for citizens and visitors in Nykøbing Falster.

The history of the habour is preserved and reinterpreted through the old silos, warehouses and habour buildings which the urban spaces are centred around. While respecting the original, the buildings are transformed into spaces for cultural institutions, restaurants, and public functions, which are combined with a variety of housing to ensure a diverse mix of residents.

The promenade, access to the water, and green urban spaces make the habour an attractive area for visitors. At the same time, cultural institutions, commercial areas, and different types of housing ensure activity throughout the whole year.

"Making this type of large-scale plan for such an important area in Nykøbing is a one-time opportunity, and from my perspective, the master plan is a fantastic response to the visions we politicians have for the harbour area and the many contributions from citizens. We want to create an area that contributes positively to Nykøbing and to the whole of Lolland-Falster, where there is access for everyone. It is a long-term plan, and we are taking one step and one stage at a time," says Mayor of Guldborgsund Municipality John Brædder.

Following a dialogue competition, C.F. Møller Architects was chosen to lead the development of the master plan for the harbour at Guldborgsund in Nykøbing Falster. The development of the harbour area will take 10-15 years. The Municipality of Guldbergsund has earmarked DKK 100 million for the project. In addition, there will be investments from investors.

In addition to the habour development at Guldborgsund in Nykøbing Falster, C.F. Møller Architects is also behind the current project at Stigsborg Brygge in Nørresundby, Haderslev Havn and Flodbyen in Randers. - C.F.
