The Civic Trust Awards were founded in 1959 to recognize excellence in architecture, design, planning, landscapes and public art. The award is given to projects of the highest architectonic quality but only if the project is assessed to make an especially positive cultural, social or financial contribution to the local community and demonstrates commitment to sustainability and universal design principles. The British award is mainly bestowed on British architecture and only rarely awarded to international projects. This year, the ‘heart of Ikast’ was one of the Civic Trust International Award winners. In addition, the building was one of eight selected by the Civic Trust National Panel as their favorite schemes from this year's Award winning projects.

"Designed to offer a cultural community focal point, the building is a powerful, accessible piece of architecture which exudes openness, warmth and welcome. A fantastic building inside and out but with particularly extraordinary interiors that demonstrate high quality architecture and high-quality approach to materiality and elegance of detail”, comments from the judges.

"The Heart is a perfect example of how to pool resources from various stakeholders and leverage necessary investments, which would otherwise have been used for smaller individual measures, to create something with a much wider reach and impact – a truly community-driven effort, which we are proud of having been a part of", says Julian Weyer, Partner, Architect maa.

Multi-functional building

C.F. Møller Architects´ expansion of the International School, Ikast-Brande, creates a meeting point where relationships between various societal and age groups can be formed and maintained. The buildings and outdoor areas are created to promote inclusive and integrative social and cultural meetings and gatherings. The expansion has sports halls with multi-functional and educational facilities, economic work opportunities including, for example cafés and office facilities. The project will make the educational facilities at the school even better, and at the same time create a new meeting point centered round an area of fast growth in Ikast. The ‘Heart’ will be surrounded by a band of activities with a rich multitude for the community, exercise and recreational pursuits.

Previously C.F. Møller Architects have won a Civic Trust Award for, among others, the Sogn & Fjordane Art Museum in Norway, 2015 and in 2017, C.F. Møller Architects won an award for their Campus Hall project at The University of Southern Denmark in Odense.
