Church Square, Holstebro

The areas around Holstebro Church and the main entrance to Holstebro Town Hall and Library have been renovated with the aim of creating a unified open space that will create a quiet, serene impression for visitors to two of the town's most important public functions: the church and the town hall. A simply-designed surfacing of red and grey granite in various different formats brings a sense of coherence and harmony to the whole area. The traffic conditions are emphasised through the design and detail of the surfacing. Large plant beds with flowering shrubs and perennials, together with newly-planted trees, help to preserve the square’s verdant character, but with a new, more modern and urban look.

The lighting is an evocative spatial element: the church and church spire, the long facade of the town hall, the sculpture on the square and the trees are all illuminated by uplights, with a warm white light inlaid into the surfacing.
