Storkeengen (the Stork Meadow) wins DANVA’s Climate Award 2025 – building on earlier architectural recognition

The climate adaptation project Storkeengen in Randers has received DANVA’s Climate Award 2025 at the Danish Water Conference on 2 December. Developed by C.F. Møller Architects in collaboration with Vandmiljø Randers and Randers Municipality, the project is recognised by the jury as a nationwide exemplar for holistic climate adaptation.

The award builds on the recognition already received earlier this year, when Storkeengen was granted Randers Municipality’s Architecture Award 2025 for its strong architectural and landscape qualities.
Holistic climate adaptation that creates value for the city

The project is honoured for its integrated approach, which combines climate adaptation with urban development, aesthetics and function – and for demonstrating how long-term planning and collaboration generate value for both the city and its citizens.

The jury behind DANVA’s Climate Award describes Storkeengen as “a textbook example of how climate adaptation can be elevated from a technical necessity to architectural and societal added value.”
The project tackles both current and future climate challenges by transforming the nearby natural area Storkeengen into a public nature park, where sophisticated water management is seamlessly integrated into a recreational landscape design.

A 270-metre-long dike serves both as flood protection and as a boundary for new wetland basins that filter rainwater before it flows into the River Gudenå. Cloudburst routes direct stormwater from Vorup to the nearby meadows, where technical solutions and ecological considerations work together.

Nature’s logic as a framework for new urban spaces
Storkeengen is shaped by the landscape's logic, where wastewater engineering solutions enhance the wetland ecosystem. New paths, boardwalks, and activity platforms invite citizens to explore the meadow’s flora and fauna, observe grazing cattle, enjoy views towards the Gudenå, or launch a canoe.

The project brings the distinctive nature of the Gudenå delta closer to Randers’ city centre – a climate initiative that simultaneously enhances the city’s identity and citizens’ everyday access to nature.

Collaboration as the backbone of the project
Both Vandmiljø Randers and Randers Municipality have played important roles in the project’s success. The municipality’s investment in the recreational elements has – according to the jury – further enhanced the project, creating a solution with both climate benefits and local added value.

DANVA’s CEO, Carl-Emil Larsen, emphasises that Storkeengen shows “what is possible when political will, professional expertise and citizen focus come together. This is precisely the holistic approach we want to promote with the Climate Award.”

C.F. Møller Architects on the recognition
Storkeengen shows how climate adaptation can develop into a compelling architectural story, where technical solutions become a seamless part of the landscape and enrich urban life. We are proud that the project is recognised for both its climate impact and its architectural excellence,” says Thomas Olsen, Head of Landscape & Urbanism at C.F. Møller Architects.

A project that continues to set standards
With DANVA’s Climate Award 2025 and the earlier Randers Municipality Architecture Award, Storkeengen demonstrates how climate adaptation, nature and architecture can be combined in a solution that delivers lasting value for the city, its citizens, and the natural environment.
