C.F. Møller Architects Designs New Headquarters for Danish Energinet

A team consisting of C.F. Møller Architects, NCC as the general contractor, and Artelia has won the competition for the new headquarters building for the Danish energy enterprise, Energinet.

The new headquarters will be constructed adjacent to Energinet's existing building in Fredericia and is intended to be perceived as a seamlessly integrated unit, both functionally and aesthetically. Approximately 900 new workspaces, a cafeteria, and a conference centre will be established. The expansion of Energinet's headquarters aims to future-proof the company's potential for organic growth. The contract sum amounts to approximately DKK 600 million.

The new construction includes a connection between the existing headquarters building and the new one on the ground floor, first floor, second floor, and basement levels. Various shared facilities such as a cafeteria, meeting rooms, and outdoor spaces will be created. In total, the building will encompass 26,750 square meters, including the basement.

"An important vision for us has been to merge the existing and the new, both architecturally and functionally, as well as in the daily experience of the building. In doing so, we create an experience of “One Energinet” with a shared DNA in terms of aesthetic principles and architectural qualities. Additionally, a well-thought-out and qualified flow strategy will create engaging and efficient movement patterns within and between the buildings," says Thue Borgen Hasløv, the responsible architect and partner on the project from C.F. Møller Architects.

Wood Creates a Pleasant Atmosphere
The primary task of the project is to function as a well-run and attractive workplace for current and future employees. The team behind the new headquarters has focused on the significant potential of designing a modern and efficient office building based on values such as openness, accessibility, and innovation.
In the project, efforts have been made to continue and adapt the atmosphere experienced in the existing office, which possesses numerous evident qualities such as transparency, light, clarity, and spaciousness. In the new headquarters, wooden floors and timber elements will contribute to creating a pleasant atmosphere, while the wooden columns of the building will add a warm and tactile character to all spaces.

"We are proud and happy that Energinet has chosen our solution," says Lasse Ebler, senior tender manager in NCC's building unit in the West under Building Nordics. "We have delivered a well-thought-out and thoroughly elaborated proposal together with C.F. Møller and Artelia – incidentally, the same team with whom we collaborate on a large timber office building in Odense for the Building Agency."

Jakob Mariager, division manager at Artelia, is also excited about a new ambitious project with the same team, which comes directly from a successful collaboration in Odense:
"Energinet naturally wants a passive building with low energy consumption but also has significant ambitions for the indoor climate and working environment. It is always exciting to reconcile these two important considerations. Especially because we know the significant impact buildings have on our health and well-being. In the bidding phase, the team has had a valuable integrated design process, where we have together found effective solutions that address indoor climate, energy, and daylight. We look forward to continuing that work."

The construction is planned to achieve a DGNB Gold certification.
After a tender with an embedded architectural competition, Energinet has selected NCC as the general contractor in collaboration with C.F. Møller Architects and Artelia.
Work will commence in the summer of 2024, with foundation work starting. The new headquarters will be ready for occupancy in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The mentioned collaboration in Odense between C.F. Møller Architects, NCC, and Artelia is the WoodHub project. WoodHub is an office building that brings together various state agencies under one roof in the heart of Odense and is a pioneering project for environmentally friendly timber construction and the largest timber building in Denmark.
