About the AG Group Head Office in Paper Factory Dalum

An iconic concrete structure at the disused Paper Factory Dalum in Odense has been transformed into the headquarters of the AG Group. Here, the industrial history of the building is preserved and given new life with a bright and dynamic office environment that simultaneously contributes to the development of Paper Factory Dalum from an old factory area into a new urban, green and diverse district.

AG Group's head office is located in the original building of Paper Factory Dalum, by the river Odense, which was established in 1874 and functioned until 2012 – and has had great industrial historical significance. The overall design strategy has been to retain the industrial architecture, and create an optimal environment for a good office environment with a lot of daylight, informal meeting places and improved contact between the departments.

The main office is built on two levels and can accommodate 40 employees. The distinctive shed ceilings on the first floor, characterised by roof surfaces that alternate between sloping and vertical, have been skylighted and panelled to contribute to good acoustics and great daylight conditions, as well as being highly characterful of the interior and exterior of the building. Other elements of the industrial architecture have been retained and reused with the existing concrete columns and grand vaults creating beautiful high ceilinged spaces with a very special atmosphere. The concrete of the original construction is preserved in its original character – and complemented by contrasting materials such as warm oak, light walls and integrated green planting.

The AG Group headquarters demonstrates the potential of preservation and transformation to create unique solutions and architectural quality with soul and history. The transformation provides a framework for a good working environment for employees, and supports the company's needs - as well as its values - by supporting more collaboration and being part of a sustainable urban development.

To support the urban development of its hometown, Odense, AG Gruppen has moved its headquarters to Paper Factory Dalum where it is part of the master plan for the area, which is part of Odense Municipality's urban strategy to make Odense Denmark's greenest city. The master plan strengthens the blue and green qualities of the area by creating links to the Odense river and removing concrete paving, increasing the area's green space by 150 percent. In addition to significantly improving biodiversity, it also means that the area's users can enjoy the recreational tranquillity of nature and have good opportunities to get around by foot and by bike, including a scenic connection to Odense city centre along the river.

The sustainable focus is also the transformation of preserved buildings and the reuse of materials. The long building with the shed roofs, where the AG Group headquarters is located, has been preserved with 85 percent. And crushed concrete is being reused to rainwaterproof the area by levelling it to direct water down to the river.
