The new Aarhus Theatre

C.F. Møller is responsible for a comprehensive and yet circumspect refurbishment of Aarhus Teater. Built in 1900, the theatre is a listed building. Refurbishment work is expected to take four years in all. The first two years are now completed; a significant renovation of the theatre's two largest performance spaces, Scala and Store Scene (the main performance space).

Since the 1970s C.F. Møller has been entrusted with a variety of refurbishments and extensions to the listed Aarhus Teater complex, which was originally built in 1900 in the Art Nouveau style by architect Hack Kampmann. The current project's most comprehensive task is to refurbish Aarhus Teater's second largest performance space, Scala, which seats just under 300. Scala is in fact an extension to Aarhus Teater erected in 1955. The architect was C.F. Møller. Like the rest of the theatre, Scala is a listed building. The lamps in the house were e.g. designed especially for Scala by architect Poul Henningsen. Scala has been completely refurbished with new seating and new parquet flooring. The smaller Stiklingen and Studio performance spaces and their common public area have also been upgraded to meet contemporary standards. The Scala foyer has been renovated to assimilate the new ticket office. Theatregoers visiting Store Scene will appreciate a series of refurbished features, including new façade lighting, the upgraded foyer and main entrance, as well as reupholstered seating in the house for about 720 people. Refurbishment work will continue until summer 2015. The next phase is to modernise Store Scene's technical equipment.
