First Sod Turned for Energy, Climate and Environment Park

The chairman of the Hillerød Utility Company Louise Colding Sørensen Tuesday broke ground for the utility company's forthcoming Energy, Climate and Environmental Park - a demonstration park for energy and climate measures, as a forward-looking and ambitious model for how to take best care of our Earth.

The 50-hectare area will include a purification plant, commercial and household recycling station, geothermal and biomass heat production, test fields for solar, wind and biomass energy, and a head office and learning centre for the Hillerød Utility Company. Instead of building a technical facility, rain water is collected from the adjacent residential areas in a newly created nature area. A key aspect of planning has been to use the topography to create flexible access and drainage conditions, and in particular from the outset to include an exit strategy for how the area can be returned to natural state at some time in the future. School classes, for example, can see the green message put into practice, and the general public can also enjoy the park's climbing areas built up with recycled soil, and walks to enjoy the wetland area's rich bird life. "When we originally planned the Climate and Environmental Park, we had a lot of focus on that the area should not only be a benefit for the utility company - but for all citizens. Therefore, the area, in addition to housing technical plants, also constitutes a living learning environment where knowledge of what how utilities work is demonstrated to all, "says a proud Louise Colding Sørensen and continues: "At the same time, the Climate and Environmental Park is a recreational area for all to use, no matter if you just want to walk or a jog, or if you would like to study birds or other animals." The initial construction works will focus on infrastructure and wetlands, followed by the individual installations such as the purification plant, the new recycling center and the Climate and Environment Center, which houses both the utility company’s employees and educational facility for children and adults, creating further transparency regarding the full cycle of utilities within an environmental oasis for the citizens of Hillerød. C. F. Møller in collaboration with engineers Moe have designed the masterplan for the Energy, Climate and Environment Park, which is targeted be completed and fully operational in 2018.
