Laboratory design awarded second prize

C.F. Møller won second prize in an international contest to design a new 20,000 m² cutting edge research and laboratory complex at the heart of Basel for one of the world's leading scientific teaching and research environments, the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) at ETH Zurich, Switzerland's technical university.

A total of 69 teams of architects applied to join an international design contest to build a complex to the value of EURO 163 million. Eighteen were chosen to take part in the main contest and at the end five teams were awarded prizes for their design proposals. C.F. Møller received second prize with our partners, Kury Stähelin Architekten (Basel) AG. C.F. Møller's concept has an innovative approach to the interaction between education, research and the local community. In C.F. Møller's proposal, the complex is open structured and located to blend seamlessly with campus life while the vibrant life of Basel city is allowed to permeate the complex and create strong interaction between student activities and the research communities which would all open onto the atrium, the project's focal point at its geographical centre. The winners of the contest were a German architectural studio, Nickl & Partner Architekten AG. The remaining projects to receive an award were all based in Zurich: (3) Boltshauser Architekten AG, (4) pool Architekten and (5) ilg santer gmbh. With the exception of D-BSSE, Switzerland's technical university ETH is located in Zurich. D-BSSE is located in Basel because there is a wealth of life sciences know-how in the city, which is, for example, home to two of the world's top five pharmaceutical companies, Roche and Novartis. The new complex is planned as part of Campus Schällemätteli, which is the life sciences centre at the University of Basel.
