These special laboratories are located in the hospital's central laboratory building on the first, second and third floors. Analyses of blood, secretion and tissue samples are critical to the rapid diagnosis of patients, so in order to minimise the transportation and analysis time a substantial proportion of the samples are delivered using pneumatic-tube systems and are analysed using an automated process.

The special laboratories are as far as possible adapted in accordance with a uniform principle comprising three zones. Towards the facade the laboratory set-up is a zone primarily comprising quiet and noisy rooms, shielded against the other laboratory areas by means of sliding doors, with the positioning ensuring generous ingress of daylight.

On both sides of the internal walkways there are zones generally featuring open laboratory set-ups, to ensure efficient use of the area and to support direct communication amongst the staff. The open laboratory areas are as a rule kept free of noisy equipment, which is instead positioned in a zone inside the building's central technical areas.
