Gotlands Garnison

The Gotland Regiment P18 is a new armoured regiment located on Gotland. The architecture reflects the regiment's operational flow and the surroundings, which together create a unique architecture and serve as a model for future defence buildings.

After winning the architectural competition organised by the Swedish Fortifications Agency in 2016, C.F. Møller has been responsible for the architectural design. In accordance with the competition's motto ‘Camouflage’, the buildings and facilities have been shaped in close interaction with the landscape, topography and operational conditions of the defence.

The regimental buildings are set back from the road in a landscape where open alvar land meets sparse pine forest. A relatively large facility has been shaped and given a natural place in the landscape. Preserved and added vegetation creates an environment where the basic features of the natural and cultural landscape are maintained. The starting point for the design of the buildings is found in this landscape and in the regiment's activities.

The organisation of buildings and activity areas is based on the flow of the regiment and consists of an area for motorised vehicles and machinery in the south, gradually transitioning to a barracks area in the north, with a shooting range as an extension.

The buildings for vehicles and machinery are distinct volumes where the folded metal sheets of the facades reflect the verticality and light play of the pine trees. The canteen, sports hall, administration and other human-centric activities have facades dominated by greyish wood. The pine material meets the colours and light of the limestone ground. Buildings with high safety requirements take their expression directly from the limestone in the ground and are constructed with light pigmented concrete. Light and close contact with nature support the well-being of employees. Flexibility is also paramount, and the choice of materials makes the spaces flexible and adaptable over time.

The objective and robust architecture of the workshops is well suited to their function. This contrasts with the bright, simple volumes of the barracks area with wooden ribs on the facades. In this way, the content of the various buildings is clearly and atmospherically emphasised, while the materials reflect their function and surroundings.
