The New SIMAC - Interior

The interior of the new SIMAC is characterised by robust natural materials such as wood and leather, which create a warm contrast to the raw concrete surfaces and support the site’s maritime identity.

The new SIMAC (Svendborg International Maritime Academy) is a beacon for the educational institutions of the future – lighting up through its integration between the city and the harbour.

Located in Svendborg, the new SIMAC is Denmark’s largest maritime educational institution. The architectural concept is based on a modular construction grid that maximises openness and flexibility within the physical framework of the academy. The structure is flexible, allowing for reconfiguration of workshop and teaching room layouts without interfering with the load-bearing structure or logistics.

The interior features exposed raw concrete surfaces, and the floors – in both the ground floor and workshops – are designed to withstand heavy use. Internal walls between the atrium and teaching spaces are partly glazed to ensure visibility and dialogue. Overall, the building achieves a simple and honest expression rooted in functionality and use.

Identity-shaping furnishings

The furniture design follows the same principles of honesty and robustness. Natural materials have been extensively used, left untreated, to highlight their inherent texture. The furniture shares the same authenticity as the building. The furniture project incorporates elements that are closest to the human body – what one sits on, leans against, and touches. The building’s raw character is complemented by warm materials, such as wood, leather, and felt, which are pleasant to see, touch, and rest against. The selected and custom-designed furniture pieces are solid and weighty, serving as a counterbalance to the large, bright and open spaces. The lighting is industrial, while selected furniture pieces feature rounded and soft forms. All surfaces are tactile and honest, continuing the architectural concept.

The colour palette draws inspiration from the landscapes of southern Funen, with reference to SIMAC’s close connection to the water, sky and passing ships. Most of the furniture has been specially designed for the new SIMAC to complete the building and reinforce its unique identity.
