Inspired and based on the site's potential and qualities, it is the ambition to create a balanced synthesis between the program’s healing and safety aspects, in order to create a beautiful, well-functioning and welcoming environment that at all levels meets the varying needs of the individual patient and treatment.
The basic concept is a terraced building layout based on simple architectural forms, which can be varied and be displaced to embed themselves beautifully and precisely in the landscape. Rather than being enclosed by a wall, the complex itself becomes the security perimeter by enclosing a large inner green landscape, while maintaining the spectacular views over the fjord.
In addition, the intention is to create a homely environment rather than an institution by providing a warm atmosphere combined with robust materials, and a varied range of facilities. Patients are free to choose their own level of privacy, from sheltered indoor environments with maximum tranquility to more lively social communal areas.
The integrated contact with the beautiful outdoor environments is essential the project's healing aspects. A landscaped circular 'loop' walk surrounds the park space, and acts as the primary connection between bed wards, main entrance and common functions, while also providing an experience in itself.
The project's focus on the patient's integrated and differentiated treatment goes hand in hand with the goal of creating the best workplace for employees.
