The task, developed in collaboration with Ionity and Optimist, required an adaptable design to cover EV chargers and meet varying local regulations and climate conditions, while also offering a pleasant and functional charging experience. The solution offers a flexible, iconic modular canopy structure that enhances user experience, providing users with a 20-minute rest area, and blends with diverse European environments.

The architectural concept focuses on creating a simple yet expressive canopy, inspired by the sleekness of modern laptops. The design features a tapered edge, giving the roof a slim appearance despite the structural requirements for supporting snow loads, PV panels, and other elements. The canopy includes a covered hangout zone, providing a comfortable space for users to relax while their vehicles charge. This area is furnished with concrete benches and plant beds, offering seating and a degree of privacy.

Durable and flexible

The construction utilises durable and easily assembled materials to withstand the diverse European climates and ensure longevity. The visible parts of the structure consist of white aluminium panels, creating a clean, modern look. The lamella-like ceiling is crafted from grooved, marine-grade laminated wood, treated with fireproof transparent lacquer. This choice of materials enhances the aesthetic appeal and ensures durability and ease of maintenance.

Landscaping is integral to the project, with green plant zones featuring local flora and small trees at the ends of the canopy. These green areas help blend the structure with its surroundings, creating a small oasis effect. The planting strategy aims to blur the boundaries between the charging station and the local environment, enhancing the user experience and promoting biodiversity.

Sustainability is a key consideration, with the project aiming to minimise material usage and create a timeless design. Using long-lasting materials and efficient construction methods ensures the canopy can endure for many years. This innovative approach, including the unique hangout zone, sets a new standard for EV charging stations, providing a functional, pleasant, and environmentally harmonious space for users across Europe.
