Bornholm Energy Island will establish a new electricity connection between Denmark and Germany, connecting future offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea to the Danish and German transmission grids. The onshore facilities will receive, convert and distribute renewable electricity, strengthening energy security while supporting the green transition across Denmark and Europe.

The Bornholm facility covers a 110-hectare site and includes 51,000 m² of buildings, comprising converter stations and a 400 kV high-voltage substation. The four largest buildings are inspired by Bornholm's distinctive rocky landscape, creating an architectural identity that connects this highly technical infrastructure to its unique surroundings. The buildings are designed with a robust concrete base and façades of natural slate.

In Høje Taastrup, the project comprises 17,000 m² of buildings on a 23-hectare site, together with associated infrastructure and landscape design.

Integrating Infrastructure and Landscape

Landscape design is integral to the facilities. Planting, access roads and stormwater retention ponds organise movement and servicing, manage surface water and establish transitions between the secured compounds and their surroundings. The landscape framework supports efficient operation, long-term maintenance and the careful integration of critical infrastructure into everyday landscapes.

Together, the facilities enable the transfer of renewable electricity across national borders, strengthening the grid and supporting a more resilient European energy system.
