At Stigsborg, utility buildings are integrated into an overall recreational urban design as recognisable points of interchange and seating in the new green district.
The buildings are part of a larger framework narrative for Stigsborg as a green district, where the concept “The City Behind the Façade” makes the infrastructure behind electricity -, water -, and heat supply visible. In addition to the utility buildings, SUDS-beds, exposed pipelines in the ground, purification ponds, and play areas with water are also elements in the learning and experience route through the district.
At the centre of the route is the Dissemination Square, where the utility buildings and seating areas provide a setting for an outdoor learning environment. Data on consumption patterns and volumes across all utilities is also disseminated here, via a digital set-up on the square.
The main architectural design emphasises high visibility of the utility buildings, adding quality to the urban space. The usually closed metal-clad utility buildings are now welcoming volumes with open facades of glass. In contrast to the brick buildings of the district, the utility buildings are designed with light facades in sustainable untreated timber cladding and green roofs. To create a relationship between the technical facilities of the different utility providers and to clarify the learning and experience route, the buildings are linked in design through the same choice of materials.
The lighting of the technical installations in the evening indicates the type of utility building you are looking into. In this way, citizens can navigate between the different technical installations and understand the connections between them.
The utility buildings are added as the stages of the plan are realized, with two out of a total of six utility buildings having currently been constructed.
