Auditoriums, University of Aarhus

Placed at the bottom of the University Park’s moraine formations are the Auditoriums, housing the university’s largest auditorium and an assembly hall used for receptions and events. After taking over the Maternity Hospital, the university built a prominent auditorium complex on the site. The Auditoriums are placed right by the lake at the end of park and in that way they connect with the beginning of the park, where the main entrance is located. Both buildings host the representative functions for the university.

Outside the buildings, a large yellow square held in the same tiles as the façades functions as the unifying place for the visitors. The Auditorium’s main entrance and foyer connect the square on the one side of the building with the lake on the other via its large windows from floor to ceiling. Inside the foyer, the underside of the auditorium hangs visibly in the room and extends through-out the three floors. Its shape is reminiscent of the moraine formations in the park, while it also functions as the canvas for the enormous painting by the Danish artist Per Kirkeby.
