Aarhus Municipal Hospital

In 1931, C.F. Møller won first prize in an architectural competition for an extension to Aarhus Municipal Hospital. The first new buildings were completed in 1935, and since the implementation of the initial plan the hospital has expanded continuously, while respecting the original concept.

The structure of the Municipal Hospital follows a simple plan: a linking thoroughfare runs from north to south, dividing the hospital between east and west. On the east side are the service buildings and staff housing, while to the west lie the treatment units and wards. In between the buildings are verdant relaxation and garden spaces, together with parking areas.

The complex is in red brick and tiles throughout, and the windows, doors, stairs and balconies are in white-painted metal. The hospital thus presents a consistent and homogeneous appearance, like that of Aarhus University on the opposite side of Nørrebrogade.
