The idea in the transforming masterplan is therefore to create a mixed urban development, where new and varied housing offers and office environments lie side by side with preserved parts of industrial history in a green and car-free urban landscape. All residents of the district will also have access to a new Rhine Promenade, in continuation of the planned International Garden Exhibition IGA which will be held in Duisburg in 2027.
Based on the existing industrial architecture, the masterplan employs a wide variety of new building types from intimate courtyards to high-rise buildings; and a network of streets, alleys and squares offers different experiences and leisure options for everyone, complemented by gardens and roof terraces with a focus on biodiversity and urban farming.
In addition to the masterplan, developed in a dialogue-based workshop process with the clients and other architects and advisers, C.F. Møller Architects has created designs for four plots in the southern half, where new timber-hybrid buildings meet transformed industrial remnants. Here, attractive and varied housing types are created around two courtyards with an emphasis on green gardens and nutrition, as well as a mixed urban space for several generations with youth and senior housing around community-oriented activities. A backbone of commercial tenancies with green terraces along the Rhine Promenade protects the homes from ship traffic noise and rises to the south so that the new quarter gets a skyline towards the river. At the southernmost point is a mobility hub with a car park, which ensures car-free urban spaces, and sports and cultural offers on the ground floor and roof terraces.
