Stigsborg is the first stage in a large urban development project, where Aalborg's old industrial area is being transformed into a new attractive district. Stigsborg waterfront is one of Denmark's largest coastal development projects. It is Aalborg's largest city park and is becoming a brand-new district in Aalborg. The transformation of Stigsborg waterfront is expected to take 25-30 years and will result in 2,000 homes that will consist primarily of rental and owner-occupied housing of 4-6 storeys. Public institutions such as schools, nursing homes and small businesses will also be accommodated in the area.
An integrated design
Working on Stigsborg, C.F. Møller Architects has taken an integrated design approach where the building and landscape design process has been seen as one integral process, as opposed to two separate ones, right from the start. At the centre of the planning for the project has been the design of attractive, vibrant and green outdoor areas around the buildings. This is achieved, among other things, by establishing a green border zone, which also mediates the transition between the public and the private areas. Furthermore, by incorporating ditches and ponds that direct road water via a rainwater conduit to the SuDs bed, it contributes to the high-tide protection of housing in the coastal area. Local roads in the new district are designed as green street spaces, with good opportunities to play and meet; there are also smaller urban spaces and a through promenade with bicycle and walking connections. In collaboration with EcoVillage, C.F. Møller Architects has also worked on the new sustainable city district Community.
