Campus Horsens is located in the city centre, close to the railway station and the city's recreational space, Vitus Beringspark. The new district is an open, car-free and welcoming "city within a city" and is part of the area's block structure - with both a continuation and reinterpretation of classic urban motifs such as the block, tower building, alley, park and town square. VIA University College has been conceived and designed based on the vision of creating an outward-facing, inviting and unifying shared learning environment, directly integrated with the city and the landscape, creating coherent relationships between students, employees, businesses and the city's residents.

Synergies and interdisciplinary relationships

The project has a strong focus on creating open and inspiring learning environments and academic hubs that will create synergies and interdisciplinary relationships between different professional groups as well as students and residents. 21 different educational disciplines come together here around professional ‘Hubs’ and ‘Makerspaces’ as well as common environments such as public restaurants, a cafe, a library, a dramatorium and an auditorium.

In terms of atmosphere, the project is characterised by a simple design strategy with the use of selected materials such as tiles in red and golden shades, oak with its warm glow, textiles in a few selected colours and distinctive bright dynamic carvings in the atria with skylights that bring the buildings’ interiors together in a bright and lively composition. Three sculpturally shaped squares are arranged around three new urban spaces that are oriented towards the city, as well as being directly connected with a central inner shared atrium that brings together all educational disciplines and functions as a new public space for the entire city. A bright, slender tower, the ‘innovation house’ houses entrepreneurial environments for the business community and anchors the project in the campus, creating a new profile as a landmark for the city's new development and future focus on knowledge sharing and innovation.
