This project creates a central meeting point for sports, culture, experiences, and commerce in the future Bällsta Hamn district through meticulous renovation emphasising reuse and cultural preservation.

The architectural concept balances historical preservation with contemporary functionality. By exposing previously hidden elements—like the original brick wall once concealed behind sheet metal—the design reconnects the building to its industrial heritage. Brown brick and black corrugated iron complement the existing aesthetic, while new interventions respect the original design language.

This complex renovation accommodates multiple concurrent sub-projects, creating efficient, flexible tenant spaces connected by internal passages that function as social meeting points and extend to the outdoor environment. The project improves the adjacent public realm by strengthening connections to nearby transportation networks and enhancing pedestrian flow through thoughtful pathway design and vegetation placement, transforming one of Stockholm's warmest paved parking areas into inviting spaces for people.

Eco-friendly approach

Sustainability is a key aspect of the renovation, with continuous workshops ensuring environmental, economic, and social responsibility. An on-site "reuse hub" reconditions products while providing employment opportunities for socially disadvantaged individuals. The team challenges conventional thinking with their "planet before comfort" approach to technical systems.

Artistic elements celebrate the building's history while introducing contemporary flair. The existing canopy structure will be repainted black, while roof sections alternate between closed, open, translucent, and plant-covered designs. Recycled brick creates plant boxes around canopy pillars and provides seating along the façade, while glass sections in the exposed brick wall create a dialogue between preservation and innovation.
