New life for old swimming baths: Ringkøbing Swimming Centre

The catalogue of ideas "New life for old swimming baths" proposes how best to transform old swimming baths into modern swimming pools and wellness centres. Many of the facilities in Denmark are 30 years old and in demand of all-encompassing renovations. The initiative is launched by The Danish Foundation for Culture and Sports Facilities, which supports innovative sports and leisure projects. Ringkøbing Swimming Pool is the pilot project.

Ringkøbing Swimming Centre, built in 1977, was of the traditional design with a 25-meter pool and a smaller children and toddlers play pool. The Swimming Centre has been given new life through a refurbishment, with new pools and play areas, a climbing wall, a water parkour course, an illuminated cave and a new mezzanine with a 150 m2 multi-purpose room with panoramic views of Ringkøbing Fjord.

The centre has also been augmented with a Turkish bath, saunas and massage rooms, and the local swimming club now has better conditions in which to provide swimming lessons.

The renovations have encompassed the pool area, water treatment and changing rooms, and energy and environmental solutions have been incorporated to make the centre more eco-friendly.
