The transformation of the Paper Halls at Dalum Paper Mill demonstrates how historic industrial buildings can be revitalized through climate-friendly solutions and socially conscious urban development. By opening and optimizing the previously closed building, a flexible and vibrant urban space has been created, combining commercial, retail, and recreational functions.

The task was to convert the worn-down paper halls into a contemporary gathering point for the new district, preserving the industrial character of the buildings. The architectural solution focuses on reinforcing the existing structure through carefully selected interventions that ensure better daylight conditions, increased flexibility, and a strong connection between buildings and landscape.

Renewed and preserved

The 260-meter-long building, previously entirely enclosed and partially damaged by earlier extensions, has now been renovated and reconstructed with windows and doors to ensure light and access. The existing building mass has largely been preserved, and original materials such as bricks have been reused and reestablished to maintain the site's authenticity. The building now once again features light brick facades, as originally intended. Concrete structures have been carefully cleaned and insulated to improve energy efficiency. New skylights in the original sawtooth roofs provide natural light and a healthy indoor climate.

The project is part of a larger master plan for Dalum Paper Mill, where the previously closed industrial site is being transformed into an open and green urban district. The site coverage has been reduced from 90% to 40%, and rainwater management and biodiversity have been integrated into the landscape design.

Today, the Paper Halls serve as the headquarters for AG Gruppen, a Netto grocery store for the Salling Group, and a flexible public urban space that can host events and activities, serving also as a charging station for electric vehicles. The project demonstrates how existing industrial buildings can be transformed into climate- and human-friendly, multifunctional spaces for future urban development.
