The extensive modernisation of Brabrand Housing Association's Department 4 in Gellerup Park has resulted in a significant improvement of the area. Existing apartments have been upgraded, and new housing types have been introduced, increasing diversity among residents. The project contributes to a positive perception of the area by enhancing homes for both current and future residents, while preserving the architectural heritage of Knud Blach Petersen, the original architect.
The project includes refurbishment and conversion of the existing apartments. It has created a mix of residences that maintain existing qualities while adding modern fittings and sizes. The landscape has been optimised and brought closer to the homes, fostering a connection with the surrounding city park and the rest of the area. The combination of building and landscape architecture results in modern and appealing homes that meet the needs of today's youth, elderly, and families.
Good housing quality and secure surroundings
The project focuses on social housing qualities and, in addition to modern homes, the physical surroundings have been enhanced to promote community and increase security in the area. This includes establishing meeting places at neighbourhood and entrance levels, as well as areas for play and recreation. The area is connected by small main paths and spacious entrance areas, ensuring easy access and coherence between residential areas and the surrounding city. The landscape is designed with wild plantings that enhance biodiversity and create visual harmony with the surrounding city park.
The renovation of the facades draws inspiration from previous renovations but with unique adaptations for each block, reflecting neighbouring buildings. This creates a clear identity and improves wayfinding in the area. New city apartments and townhouses on the ground floor create a vibrant and safe environment along a newly established urban strip that acts as a boundary zone towards the parking areas. The private terraces along the urban strip are designed to balance privacy and views, with various evergreen plantings creating variation and contrast to the architecture of the buildings.
Overall, the modernisation of Brabrand Housing Association's Department 4 creates a modern and attractive neighbourhood that promotes diversity, community, and security for both current and future residents.
