The proposal Fabrikken gives new life to one of Brønderslev’s most important industrial sites by transforming the former factory buildings into an open and welcoming cultural environment. Museum, theatre, cinema, culture school, café and public meeting spaces are gathered within the existing industrial complex, creating a shared place for culture, learning and everyday life. Rather than replacing the buildings, the project builds on the qualities already found within the former factory, the raw concrete structures, large industrial spaces and visible traces of production and use. At the centre of the project is the new internal Torv, a shared public heart that creates space for everyday life, events and informal meetings. Large openings in the existing floor slabs bring daylight into the centre of the complex and create visual connections between floors and activities. The Torv functions as both arrival space and meeting place, where visitors move between the museum, theatre, culture school and café throughout the day.
The transformation is guided by a clear strategy of preserving, adapting and reusing as much of the existing complex as possible. Existing concrete structures, facades, steel elements and industrial surfaces are retained and remain visible throughout the project, allowing the history of the former factory to remain present in the new cultural house. Materials removed during the transformation are reused directly within the project as paving, stairs, wall cladding and interior elements.
New additions are carefully integrated into the existing structures and scale of the industrial complex. At the same time, the project opens the former factory towards both the city and the Rhododendron Park through new entrances, pathways and public spaces. Former back-of-house areas are transformed into welcoming outdoor spaces that support cultural events, everyday use and new connections between the city, the park and Fabrikken.
