University City is being created through the conversion, renovation and new construction of the former Municipal Hospital in Aarhus into a cohesive urban campus for Aarhus University.
The transformation is carried out in close collaboration between FEAS, the developer, and Aarhus University, the primary tenant. In 2025, a new Partner building for the university’s collaborators will open in University City in Aarhus.
The concept of the Partner building is to create an environment with business facilities, start-ups and workshops that support innovation, creativity and production. The users will be small and medium-sized enterprises, foundations, organisations and start-ups collaborating with Aarhus University.
The ambition is to create development opportunities for start-ups on a research-based foundation, with a large co-working environment featuring shared facilities and meeting points for social interaction and professional exchange.
A makerspace with a range of workshop and laboratory facilities will be established to support the development of prototypes and components.
The partner building is located within former hospital buildings forming a complex constructed in several phases from the 1940s to the 1990s.
The transformation retains the original structures and building elements wherever possible. At the same time, a number of energy-saving measures are implemented carefully, including roof insulation and window replacement.
The technical installations are replaced with modern systems that feature low energy consumption and efficient control. The 10,000 m² partner building is centrally located in University City, with close links to the University Park – a hub for development and innovation.
University City will be DGNB-certified as a district, and the building complexes will achieve DGNB Gold certification for new construction and major refurbishment.
