The Aalborg utilities company sought to revitalise the surroundings of the administration and staff building at the Renseanlæg Vest purification plant. The area, defined by prominent brown brick structures and technical facilities, is surrounded by well-organised outdoor spaces and large, manicured lawns. The facility is bordered by a planted embankment, contrasting with the surrounding wild nature and fjord.
Harmony and Contrast
The new landscape design enhances this contrast by employing sharp lines and robust materials such as brick pavers, concrete slabs, and corten steel. These elements accentuate the site’s striking architectural features while standing against the wild natural surroundings. The paving and fixtures are modern and durable, with warm, tactile materials that soften the overall design on a smaller scale.
The wastewater treatment facility attracts a diverse range of visitors, including school groups and associations. A significant aspect of the project was to improve accessibility for all, including those with physical disabilities. Enhancements include new "floating" stairs, a ramp integrated into the landscape, and outdoor handwashing stations.
Brick pavers were selected for their warm aesthetic, complementing the existing brown brick buildings. They replace some previous planting areas, adding a material character close to the buildings. Together with concrete slabs and corten steel, these materials further define the sharp lines and industrial character of the landscape.
