Göta Ark is a distinctive office building by Medborgarplatsen on Södermalm in Stockholm. Built in the 1980s, it is a characteristic example of the period’s postmodern architecture, with its distinctive geometric form, pale yellow concrete façades and green detailing.

The transformation builds on the existing architecture through precise and restrained additions rather than replacing its identity. The ambition is to create new and varied spatial experiences within the building, while making it more visible, accessible and better connected to its surroundings.

The building is characterised by an E-shaped plan, pale yellow prefabricated concrete façades, green metal detailing and two generous courtyards. Originally designed with bridges, spiral staircases and integrated artworks, the courtyards are given a renewed central role. Improved connections, clearer circulation and increased daylight make the building easier to navigate and create more generous shared spaces.

At ground level, the building is opened up towards Medborgarplatsen, Repslagargatan, Högbergsgatan and Fatbursparken. More clearly defined entrances and active ground-floor spaces replace what is currently a closed rear façade. Towards Fatbursparken, a stronger connection is established between the building and the park.

New glazed roof structures bring daylight and character to the courtyards, while a new roof terrace creates an elevated outdoor space. Each addition is deliberately complementary, preserving and clarifying the qualities of the existing architecture. Göta Ark is given a new lease of life while carrying its architectural legacy forward.
