Karré A has been developed as a key landmark in Brokvarteret, a contemporary interpretation of the classic urban district situated between Aarhus city centre and the natural landscape around Brabrand Lake. The ambition has been to create a high-rise with a strong identity – one that contributes to the district’s overall character while supporting vibrant everyday life for residents and visitors alike. Prominently located by Ringgadebroen, the tower serves as a visible culmination of the development of Trekanten and as a point of orientation within the city.
The high-rise is designed as a composition of staggered volumes, giving the building a sculptural and dynamic expression. The shifts between the volumes break down the scale of the tower and create a character that is experienced differently from the city’s many approach routes. The façades are articulated through variations in depth, proportion and materiality. The use of brick connects the tower with the surrounding buildings in Brokvarteret and continues the area’s interpretation of the classic Aarhus perimeter-block city. The brick façades tie the high-rise to the district’s other buildings, while variations in colour, detailing and framed balconies create depth and lend the façades character.
A vibrant transition between home and city
A recurring architectural motif is the large framed balconies, which stand out as distinctive elements of the façade. Their deep frames create changing shadow effects while providing residents with generous outdoor spaces overlooking the city and the river valley. Together with the green roof terraces, they draw life out into the façade, making the building lively and ever-changing over time. At the foot of the high-rise, a green urban space with places to meet and stay will invite both residents and users of the Brabrand Trail to spend time in the area.
Karré A forms part of Brokvarteret’s overall vision to create a dense, diverse and vibrant urban district with strong connections between homes, public spaces and nature. Together with the neighbourhood’s boulevard, green recreational spaces and varied housing types, the tower contributes to an urban environment where community, movement and everyday life unfold across different scales.
