C.F. Møller Architects awarded on World Architecture Day

Buildings in Svendborg and Aalborg receive recognition on World Architecture Day. One of the buildings is an educational institution, and the other is an office building. They both focus on flexibility, integration with the surroundings, architectural uniqueness, and openness, making them relevant to both users and the city's residents.

World Architecture Day on October 2nd was celebrated in Svendborg and Aalborg with awards for the year's best buildings. C.F. Møller Architects has been honoured for SIMAC in Svendborg, designed in collaboration with EFFEKT Architects, and KANT in Aalborg.

SIMAC is a new and Denmark's largest maritime education centre located by the harbour in Svendborg. With its flexible spaces and utilization of the waterfront location, it becomes a beacon for modern education and the transformation from pure industry to a new vibrant district with education, business, and recreational areas. The building's floor plan is shaped like a cross, forming corners for four squares and with public access to shared facilities. The quayside itself becomes an outdoor laboratory displaying the school's work and maritime virtues.

"With its raw materials and simple structure, the building fits into the harbour environment and maritime history. The heart of the building is a large space that opens towards the sky, while the ground floor is set back in all four corners, leaving covered outdoor spaces that connect the school's life with the outside world. Moreover, large glass areas illuminate the building's activities when the lights come on in the evening, illuminating the quayside. The building is therefore in summary convincingly connected to the location," according to Svendborg's Architecture Council, which is behind the award.

KANT is a new office building in Aalborg, which houses, among others, The Nordjyske Mediehus and stands as a prominent corner building next to several of the city's iconic structures, including Musikkens Hus. The office building adapts to the surroundings in scale but also stands out with facades combining black aluminium panels and large glass sections.

At street level, the building features a tall and transparent facade, creating transparency around life inside and inviting passersby into the continuous and public arrival area, connecting the city's western side with the Østre Havn area. The spaces in the entire arrival area have double height, providing space for stages and event facilities.

"The striking office building simultaneously has a raw and refined expression. The facade is dark and distinctive with simple detailing and scaling, which, along with the varied rhythm of the vertical slats, gives a 'playful' expression to the monochrome facade. The large glass sections at street level contribute to openness and create a strong connection with the functions on the ground floor. Thus, life in the building adds to the experience for passersby. The double-height entrance area, exposing the media house and the vertical stairwell, creates spatial experiences for the building's users, just like the shared facilities on the cantilevered top floor with its unique view. The office building manages to create an expressive architectural work that fits into the scale of the surroundings and appears open to the city," said the Jury behind the award.
