The modernisation of Avicii Arena (The Globe) has been awarded the 2025 Swedish Steel Construction Award by the Swedish Institute of Steel Construction.

After 35 years, the iconic spherical arena has been renewed through a careful and highly technical transformation by C.F. Møller Architects together with HOK and schlaich bergermann partner.

At the heart of the upgrade is a new steel cable-net structure at the arena’s “equator”. Designed to solve long-standing acoustic and staging challenges, it now enables flexible configurations and supports significant loads while using a minimal amount of material. Its transparency preserves the Globe’s original geometry — keeping its recognisable silhouette intact while giving the interior entirely new performance qualities.

The Jury highlights the project’s precision, its material-efficient structure, and the close collaboration between architect, engineer and contractor — all essential when renewing large-scale venues with strong architectural identities.

The Jury states:
“Since its completion in 1989, the Globe Arena has been a symbol of Stockholm and a space for major concerts and sporting events. The spherical body has given the building its strong character, but internally the shape has also created problems that have often required extensive temporary interventions to solve the interaction between stage/arena and audience.

After 35 years, the building has undergone extensive modernization, which has maintained the iconic spherical architecture, but added an internal steel structure that solves many of the functional problems. The project has been carried out with a very high precision, and in a close and fruitful cooperation between designer, architect, and contractor. This is not least visible in the material efficient cable-net structure and the complex detail work, where extremely large forces are to be transferred between different structural elements. It is a world-class steel structure and a worthy winner of this year's Steel Construction Award.”

“For us, the project demonstrates what we specialise in: upgrading major sports and event venues with solutions that enhance functionality, extend lifespan, and respect existing architectural value.”, says Mårten Leringe, partner and architect at C.F. Møller Architects.
