Fjordpladsen at Stigsborg Waterfront receives an award from Aalborg Municipality

On World Architecture Day, Aalborg Municipality honours Fjordpladsen at Stigsborg Waterfront. Designed by C.F. Møller Architects, the public space connects the new neighbourhood with the Limfjord, combining places to relax, play and enjoy activities by the water with rainwater management and environmental protection.

Stigsborg Waterfront transforms a former industrial site on the Limfjord into a new residential neighbourhood. C.F. Møller Architects is behind the development of the area, including several of its residential buildings and public squares. Fjordpladsen sits at the end of the neighbourhood’s main street, where the school, shops and homes meet the waterfront.

A large timber deck offers space to relax and play, as well as access to the fjord for launching kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. On land, children can explore the rainwater basins, while native trees and planting create green spaces to spend time and support biodiversity and a pleasant microclimate.

“Fjordpladsen is intended to encourage people to come together and enjoy the fjord in their everyday lives. We have worked to make rainwater management part of the square’s life and landscape, so that the technical solutions also offer experiences and places to spend time. The award is a welcome recognition of this approach,” says Søren Tortzen, creative lead and head of C.F. Møller Architects’ Aalborg office.

A cycle path and a broad pedestrian area make the square a hub for people walking and cycling through the neighbourhood. Along the fjord, a gravel promenade continues into the adjoining Stigspark.

Rainwater management and environmental protection as part of the public space

The rainwater basins are integrated into the square's design, forming green islands with seating for relaxation. Here, rainwater is treated before being discharged into the fjord.
The project also includes extending the shoreline with a new stone revetment and the placement of sand over an existing beach and shallow-water area. This forms part of the measures to protect the environment and contain contamination from the former industrial site.

Aalborg Municipality explains its decision to present the award:
“Stigsborg has gained an urban waterfront space that skilfully brings the city and the fjord together. A varied layout, offering different opportunities for relaxation and activity, creates an attractive setting for everyday use and community life. The area also serves as a central hub for the entire neighbourhood, bringing together connections between the city, the water and the recreational spaces along the waterfront. The project thus helps shape Stigsborg’s identity and supports an active and accessible urban life centred on the fjord."

Fjordpladsen builds on C.F. Møller Architects’ experience in transforming former industrial and harbour areas into lively public spaces, with a focus on recreation, climate resilience and connections to the existing city. Examples include Aalborg Waterfront, which has received several awards and is widely used by residents and visitors alike. The practice is also working on projects in Nakskov and Guldborgsund, as well as the final section of Aalborg Waterfront around the former distillery, Spritten (a former liquor factory) and Mjøsfronten in Norway.
