Winner of the Competition for Modernisation of Gellerupparken in Aarhus, Denmark

C.F. Møller Architects, along with Transform, NCC, and Ingeniør’ne, has won the competition to modernise Gellerupparken through extensive renovations and reconstructions. The goal is to enhance the well-being, diversity, and safety of residents and visitors in the area.

Gellerupparken, located in Brabrand near Aarhus, is Denmark's largest and most well-known housing estate. The area, constructed between 1968 and 1972, was initially perceived as luxurious with spacious intervals between buildings and facilities aimed at both residents and visitors as part of the Gellerup Plan.

Gellerupparken is now facing a comprehensive renovation and reconstruction of five seven-storey high-rise blocks. Previously, two of the high-rise blocks in Gellerupparken have been transformed and renovated, and now the final five blocks, containing 600 homes, will be increased to 750 homes through the project. This will provide entirely new types and sizes of housing, offering a more varied range of accommodation that better match the housing market.
The internal and external renovation is a significant element of the comprehensive plan and a major step towards transforming Gellerup from a vulnerable housing area into an attractive district, naturally integrated with the rest of Aarhus, explains Brabrand Housing Association director Kristian Würtz.

“With this ambitious renovation project, we are future-proofing our homes and outdoor areas by upgrading and improving them for the benefit of both existing and new residents. This is happening while preserving and refining the architecture of the modernist-inspired housing blocks built in the late 1960s,” he says.

A step towards diversity and safety
The renovation includes both existing apartments and the addition of new housing types with modern layouts and sizes through reconstructions and breakthroughs of the heavy concrete walls. The landscape is brought closer to the homes via a city street along the blocks, creating cohesion with the surrounding city park and the rest of the area. The combination of building and landscape architecture results in modern and attractive homes that meet today's needs for young people, the elderly, and families.

Rune Bjerno Nielsen, partner, architect and head of C.F. Møller’s competition department in Aarhus, states: "At C.F. Møller, in close collaboration with Transform, Ingeniør’ne, and NCC, we have focused heavily on the importance of this task. Both in terms of improving the physical conditions for residents, the opportunity to change perceptions of a housing area in Aarhus, and because the task points towards a future with the transformation and optimisation of the existing building stock as a significant part of our profession. We look forward to working with Brabrand Housing Association and the residents to respectfully modernise architect Knud Blach Petersen's iconic original blocks."

A Holistic Approach
The project prioritises social living qualities by improving the physical surroundings to promote community and increase safety. This includes new meeting places at the neighbourhood and entrance levels, as well as areas for play and recreation. Small main paths and spacious arrival areas ensure easy access and connection between the housing areas and the surrounding city. The landscape is designed with wild plantings that strengthen biodiversity and create visual coherence with the surrounding city park.

The facade renovations draw inspiration from previous projects but with unique adaptations for each block, creating a clear identity and improving wayfinding in the area. New city apartments and terraced houses on the ground floor create a lively and safe environment along a newly established city band, which serves as a buffer zone against the parking areas. Private terraces along the city band are designed with a balance between privacy and outlook, where evergreen plantings create variation and contrast to the architecture of the buildings.

Overall, the modernisation of Brabrand Housing Association’s section 4 creates a contemporary and attractive district that promotes diversity, community, and safety for both current and future residents. C.F. Møller has previously modernised and upgraded Brabrand Housing Association’s sections 1 and 2, and has also assisted Himmerland Housing Association in Aalborg and HAB in Haderslev with similar projects.
