1,600 researchers are accommodated in the 65,000 sqm. new research centre, which was completed in the spring.

Construction began in 2013 and the building completed sooner than forecasted and below budget.

- KI is world-famous for its basic research, and Biomedicum will take this research to new heights, says Karolinska Institutet’s President Ole Petter Ottesen.

- Biomedicum brings together leading research groups from five different departments. These research groups can now meet across departmental boundaries and benefit from a modern infrastructure.

At the inauguration today, the ribbon was cut by Karolinska Institutet's Vice-President Karin Dahlman-Wright and the Chair of KI’s Board Mikael Odenberg.

Centre of international cutting edge research
Biomedicum is located between Aula Medica and the Widerström Building, and has a direct link to BioClinicum, the clinical research environment at Karolinska University Hospital, via a physical connecting corridor over Solnavägen.

Thanks to its proximity to BioClinicum, the new hospital, SciLife Lab, Comparative Medicine and all the other research environments on Campus Solna and Campus North, Biomedicum will become a hub for KI's research and a centre of international cutting edge research.

Social and flexible
With Biomedicum, the Karolinska Institute will gain a single unifying environment for future research, with ultra-flexibly equipped laboratories and office facilities that will act as a catalyst for cross-cutting collaboration between the various research and study environments.

- The new construction is not only intended to provide a building in the campus park, but also to accommodate the park within the building. With a glass-covered green atrium, the outdoor campus area is continued through the building, thereby reinforcing the social qualities of the green campus to the benefit of knowledge-sharing and interdisciplinarity, says partner, architect and managing director Mårten Leringe at C.F. Møller Architects’ Stockholm branch.

The building''s openness, created amongst other things by way of a transparent, inviting ground floor with access to the atrium as well as a café and public exhibition space, also forms new linkages through the park, and thereby opens up the Karolinska Institute both towards the city and towards the planned new university hospital, Nya Karolinska Solna (NKS), which will be directly adjacent.

Biomedicum will thus become a pivotal point in the area - a distinctive icon for the world-class research for which the Karolinska Institute is known.

The building has been nominated for “Årets bygge 2019”, a competition to award the best building project in Sweden, by the magazine Byggindustrin, and is owned and managed by Akademiska Hus.

- We are proud and happy that Biomedicum is now ready for the inauguration. Together with Karolinska Institutet and a line of collaborators we have succeded in completing the building ahead of time and under budget, says managing director Kerstin Lindberg Göransson, Akademiska Hus.

The interior design was by Nyréns Arkitektkontor, and Skanska was the general contractor for the construction of Biomedicum.
