Mjøsfronten is now open to all

The first stage in the development of Mjøsfronten, Hamar's new gathering place where the city meets the water and people of all ages come together, was officially opened on 20 June with a public celebration.

Mjøsfronten is a 50,000-square-metre waterfront in the municipality of Hamar. C.F. Møller Architects has had the pleasure of shaping the area into a vibrant urban space and meeting place, bringing the city closer to Lake Mjøsa. Following many years of collaboration with Hamar municipality, contractors, advisers, waterfront developers and other stakeholders, the first phase is now complete and has been officially opened with a public celebration.

The opening was marked by festivities along the entire waterfront. Skibladner, which this year celebrates its 170th anniversary, opened proceedings with a cannon salute, followed by music, choral singing, brass bands, speeches, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and, not least, a host of activities for people of all ages. Later in the evening, Solplassen was inaugurated with dancing, a big band, refreshments, and live music.

"It is wonderful to see the project realised and to witness how the area is being embraced by so many people. Life is truly beginning to fill the space, and this also highlights the value of the extensive work and collaboration that underpins it. Behind this project stand many highly skilled professionals and years of close, productive partnership," says Therese Mælen-Ødegaard, Head of C.F. Møller Architects in Oslo.

Mjøsfronten is being developed in several phases and comprises three main sections. The first stage has seen the completion of the new Skibladner Pier and its adjoining Skibladner Square, a new promenade along the inner harbour, and Solplassen. Together, these elements form a cohesive new urban space along the waterfront. Solplassen serves as the city's urban interface with Lake Mjøsa – a place for recreation, activity and celebrations, where landscape and urban life converge.

An important aspect of the methodology throughout the development process has been activating the area through temporary interventions and programming, carried out in parallel with the construction works. This approach has generated early urban life, enabled the testing of functions, and established a solid foundation for future development.

The transformation of the former port and infrastructure-dominated area encompasses not only physical renewal but also a wealth of stories – large and small – about people, collaboration and the site’s evolution over time. By gradually activating the area through temporary measures and ongoing programming, life has been brought to the urban space well ahead of completion, whilst simultaneously laying the groundwork for continued development.

"With Mjøsfronten, Hamar has gained a new urban waterfront, and we are grateful for the opportunity to have helped shape this place," says landscape architect at C.F. Møller Architects Ragnhild Augustsen.
