The project addresses the need to update the arena's 1989 configuration to accommodate contemporary event requirements, from ice hockey matches to concerts while maintaining its status as the world's largest spherical building. The architectural solution, developed through collaboration between HOK, C.F. Møller Architects, and structural engineers SBP, respects the building's protected status while introducing innovative technical solutions.

The renovation's centrepiece is a sophisticated steel ring supporting the new retractable roof and rigging system, complemented by new gondolas and premium lounges. The upper grandstand has been replaced with modern boxes and event spaces, improving sight lines and proximity to the arena floor. The venue's capacity of 16,200 spectators can now be flexibly adjusted to create more intimate settings for smaller events while maintaining optimal acoustic performance.

Preserved past and future flexibility

Material choices have been carefully considered to harmonize with the original structure. The existing colour palette is maintained, with the strategic introduction of black elements in new components and seating to create a "black box" atmosphere that focuses attention on the events. This approach creates a clear distinction between new and existing elements while maintaining architectural coherence through the interplay of geometric forms—the original sphere, triangle, and cylinder contrasting with sharp new ceiling elements.

The renovation incorporates significant technical innovations, particularly in the retractable roof system, representing a breakthrough in arena design technology. This solution maintains the unique spherical spatial experience while providing unprecedented flexibility for event configuration. The modernization ensures optimal conditions for various events, from sports to concerts, with improved acoustics and viewing experiences.

The project demonstrates a commitment to cultural sustainability by preserving and enhancing a significant architectural landmark while adapting it for future generations. The renovated arena will continue to serve as a vital cultural catalyst for Stockholm, creating spaces that foster community connection through shared experiences in sports and entertainment events.
