Groundbreaking for Malmö Stadium

The first spade has been driven into the ground for Malmö’s new stadium, officially marking the start of construction on a new venue for elite sport, local clubs, schools and major international sporting events.

On the site where the old stadium has stood since the 1958 World Cup, a modern sports arena will now begin to take shape. The new stadium will primarily be used for both football and athletics. But the ambition is bigger than simply creating a venue for match days.

Johan Hermansson, Malmö’s Director of Leisure, said the new stadium should become a place where generations of Malmö residents can feel at home:

“The facility will be used by sports clubs, students and other groups, and we have listened carefully to the needs of both athletics and football. A big thank you to everyone who has been involved and contributed to getting us to this point today, as we finally break ground on the new stadium.”

Designed for more than sport

The brief was to design a new stadium to replace the existing one, with the aim of creating an identity-defining building that brings together elite sport, daily use and strong civic value.

In collaboration with Elding Oscarson and DIFK, C.F. Møller Architects designed a transparent, low-lying and sculptural structure that challenges the traditional concept of a stadium – as much an urban space as a sports venue.

“It feels very significant to see the vision for Malmö’s new stadium now beginning to be realised. Our ambition is to create an iconic building for sport in Malmö, but also an open and welcoming place where sport, everyday life and community come together. A building that will become a natural part of Malmö for many years to come,” says Mårten Leringe, Architect and Partner at C.F. Møller Architects.

Reusing the past to build the future
The stadium serves as a venue for everyday sports such as athletics, football and martial arts and accommodates over 8,000 seats. Foyers, pop-up areas and running tracks activate the ground floor and integrate with the city’s movement patterns.

The construction is both climate-friendly and adaptable – the ground level is built in concrete with long spans, while the upper levels in timber allow for future expansion.

Reused materials from the existing stadium, integrated solar panels, rainwater harvesting and climate-optimised material choices reduce the project’s environmental impact and form part of the building’s architectural expression.
