Awarded by the city of Herning

The new domicile, logistics centre, and landscape park for Danish wool and textile company Dilling receives this year's Herning Municipality Building Award.

“We are proud to receive this award, and we see it as a great acknowledgement of our way of integrating building and landscape and equal focus on creating well-being for employees, visitors, and nature. And a big thank you to Dilling for letting us in and sharing the same mission., says Klaus Toustrup, partner and architect at C.F. Møller Architects.

Dilling is a wool and textile company selling goods in Denmark and internationally since 1916. As the business expanded, the site expanded through several phases, beginning with a logistics centre as the first completed part of the new facilities. The façade of the logistics centre is slatted with timber that creates a unified expression, with varying openings between slats creating transparency and large glass panes providing the employees with natural daylight and a view of the surrounding new park, where nature restoration, biodiversity and rainwater management have been a significant focus.

"Your building demonstrates that commercial structures don't have to be dull or impersonal. Let's hope that your project, which thoughtfully incorporates the surrounding landscape, can inspire others in the future," said Mayor Dorte West during the award presentation in Herning on Monday 7th and continues,

"Good architecture has a significant impact. The spaces that shape our daily lives matter. They affect our quality of life – and the climate, which is influenced by how we build and plan our cities."

Both Aesthetic and Visionary
The new office building strongly focuses on climate-friendliness, reflecting the company's focus on a sustainable profile and products. The construction of the two-storey office building primarily consists of timber frames. The building is curved to create a connection to the park and nature at one end of the building. In the kink of the building, the entrance to the house is established in a double-height foyer, from which you can move to all sections of the building. A showroom, office functions, and a sewing room are based on the ground floor. On the first floor are meeting rooms and an event hall with a full-width external staircase, connecting directly to the landscaped park with natural vegetation focusing on biodiversity and a fully integrated rainwater basin.

The park results from Dilling’s decision to improve biodiversity and convert 53.000 m2 of traditional farming land into a nature park for animals and local fauna.

The judges praised the project in their statement: "It is commendable to have an ambitious developer, striving to build with high architectural quality, creating a structure that benefits its employees and contributes to the city by providing a beautiful and cohesive experience. It is proof that production and warehouse buildings can be beautiful."

Four projects were nominated this year. Herning Municipality's Building Award has been presented annually since 1991.
