The purpose of the Committee for Architectural Awards in Aalborg is to promote interest in the construction of good, beautiful, and healthy buildings and urban spaces within the municipality, as well as to increase awareness of how architectural quality can be enhanced in every respect. In 2025, the committee has chosen to honour ObelHus.
ObelHus is a former tobacco factory, originally built in 1936 by architect Preben Hansen. The challenge lay particularly in transforming the distinctly industrial spaces into contemporary housing, while at the same time preserving the sense of history and industrial heritage. The apartments have therefore been designed with respect for the characteristic features of the existing building structure, expressed in the façade’s grid system of columns and beams, and the large window openings.
The jury’s statement reads:
“The project is a fine example of a sensitive transformation of a heritage-worthy industrial building.
C.W. Obel’s former tobacco factory from 1936 – later used for offices and teaching – has been transformed into new, modern housing with respect for the building’s industrial spirit and cultural-historical values.
The original expression of the façade has been retained – only the addition of light balconies reveals the new use and adds a discreet new layer to the façade.”
