C.F. Møller Architects transforms former school into a people’s house

C.F. Møller Architects, together with the people behind Folkehuset VØ, unveil the plans for a future lighthouse for communities with the goal to strengthen tourism and local business, cultural and daily life in a Danish coastal town.

Vorupør is a small town on the Danish west coast with about 600 inhabitants and more than 10,000 visitors on an average daily basis during the summer months. The area is famous as a surfer’s hot spot called Cold Hawaii. In the centre of the town is a former primary school, whose three buildings are now occupied by the town's enthusiasts as a shared office, fitness centre, free childcare- and community centre. The buildings today lack a clear coherence and are not welcoming to the city's remaining citizens and visitors, limiting the creation of communities. The project transforms the primary school into Folkehuset (People House) VØ - a new gathering place for citizens and tourists with architectural reference to local lighthouses and an important beacon for the development of the local community.

- The existing building limits the creation of communities, and we see great potential for a new vibrant building with activities for the whole town - a lighthouse for community and creative development. The project transforms the old school into a new gathering place for locals and tourists, and supports an environment where tourism contributes to local development, on the locals' terms, says Jens Rex, Head of Landscape & Urbanism at C.F. Møller Architects.

Lighthouse on the west coast

The architectural solution is inspired by the unique qualities of the coastal area and combines sensuality, functionality and local history. In addition to the transformation of the school, the project includes a new extension that acts as a lighthouse, creating a welcoming and open space, signalling Vorupør as a great place to live in and visit, with space for social, cultural and work-related activities for people of all ages.

The facade of the tower consists of a transparent material that provides unique lighting and invites skylight into the building in a high atrium space. The space can be used for various activities, such as art exhibitions and cultural events. The building has a staircase leading to a viewing platform at the top, from where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view over Thy National Park. The artistic detail in the use of translucent material and the incidence of light contribute to the building's unique aesthetics and symbolism as a lighthouse in both concrete and figurative terms.

A true people's house
Folkehuset VØ has been created with great involvement of the local citizens, users, tourism- and business associations. Citizens' meetings and workshops have been organised with various stakeholders to ensure that the project reflects the needs and wishes of the local area. These activities have created a strong sense of ownership in the local community and broad support for the project. Building on the existing qualities and ensuring that community and networks can unfold across the people who use the site has led to a strong anchoring in the local community and broad support for the project, The project thus adds value to the local area by revitalising the old school and creating a multifunctional, accessible and welcoming building that can enrich both locals and visitors.

Folkehuset VØ generally supports "The national strategy for sustainable growth in Danish tourism", which aims to ensure that tourism creates value for the surrounding community, "Development Plan for the West Coast" aiming at creating attractive destinations and the "Strategic Physical Development Plan for Klitmøller and Vorupør", as Folkehuset VØ is an investment in cultural and leisure experiences that creates a meeting between the authentic local and growth-generating tourism.
