The proposal "Storehouse of Knowledge" has won the parallel assignment for Malmö University's new building (Amphitrite 1) on Universitetsholmen. The architects behind the winning entry are C.F. Møller Architects and Förstberg Ling, together with the urban planning firm Softer.
Amphitrite is centrally located next to the university's landmark building, Niagara. The building will house Malmö University's Faculty of Odontology (Dental School) among other functions, including learning environments and administrative spaces.
The winning proposal, "Storehouse of Knowledge," preserves parts of the existing warehouse building and highlights the area's harbour and industrial history. With welcoming entrances, vibrant interiors, and a visual nod to history, the new building creates inviting living spaces for both students and Malmö residents.
Amphitrite adopts a circular approach, aiming to reuse or repurpose the existing structure as much as possible. Health and well-being are promoted by optimising natural daylight, offering outdoor views, creating accessible outdoor areas, and providing pleasant working environments for all.
The jury's statement about the winning proposal:
"Magazine for Knowledge" demonstrates sensitivity to the site's unique character and is beautifully designed to harmonise with its surroundings and its closest university neighbour, Niagara. The building invites and connects all floor levels, offering a variety of meeting spaces and environments, both inside the building and in its interaction with the surroundings. This creates the foundation for a vibrant campus environment that also integrates into the city. The team's empathy for the task is reflected in an architectural approach that, with respect for cultural history and innovative ideas, becomes a worthy representative of the socially engaged academy that the university embodies.
Stefana Hoti (MP), Chair of the Malmö City Planning Committee, commented:
"Amphitrite is an important puzzle piece, adding something new while maintaining a clear connection to the history of the site and building. I am delighted we have agreed on a building with so many outstanding qualities, both architecturally and in terms of sustainability. Amphitrite will be a social hub for students, university staff, and Malmö residents, with its internal social spaces and its connection to the quay and harbour basin, where Malmö city has created an inviting and active space."
